It seems like every once in a while, SNL writers go back to the “wacky international TV personality” trope. Way back when, it was Dieter on Sprockets or Hans and Franz. It just comes off as a hacky way to fill a few minutes and make a new character.

I think it’s kind of hilarious that people are asking “why Elon Musk?” when the answer is pretty obvious - people have been talking about it incessantly for weeks now. SNL doesn’t care if you’re “hate watching” as long as you’re watching.
