hahaha yeah. it’s especially funny to me because i think—despite literally never being personally upset about anything—that i have also developed a reputation among some jezebel commenters as being super hostile when like, as summer said on the OC, “you haven’t seen hostel till you put me up in one”

Also, from the ‘30s...Noted Swedish actor Nils Asther playing Chinese in Frank Capra’s The Bitter Tea of General Yen. Yikes.

Except many schools are using that book to teach students about the civil rights movement.

The main reasons for outage over The Help: white people didn’t spearhead the Civil Rights movement; it wasn’t won by a rich white girl sneaking around; and white people didn’t wake up one day and realize racism was wrong. I hadn’t heard of The Help except in passing, but once I read an article saying that Abilene Cooper, the actual maid who worked for Kathryn Stockett’s family when she was young, objected to the book and movie, I had no interest in seeing it. It all seemed a little scummy to me.

Fred Astaire and Lucille Bremer in Ziegfeld Follies.

I have never more in my life been in love with and simultaneously wanted a man to be my father than Stanley Tucci in this movie. My love for The Tooch is never ending.

Marlon Brando thought playing Japanese was an offer he couldn’t refuse.
(Get it? Godfather reference! Good one, me.)

Myrna Loy is also a fan.

Damn, what is that from?

I see your Rooney and raise you a Lorre - he gives Emma Stone a big thumbs-up!

Had to remind me, didn’t you?

For everyone commenting with anecdotes about their Hapa friends/relatives/dog walkers/random persons: NOT THE FUCKING POINT.

I want so badly to admire Emma Stone. I loved Easy A. Really just adore that movie. But jeezus fuck is she making it impossible. Between this and The Help and how many Woody Allen movies? I'm kinda done. She is not Olive.

Katharine Hepburn has no issue with this casting...

It’s also crazy that Aloha came out at the same time as this incredible William Finnegan personal history about Hawaii and race and surfing and devotion, in the New Yorker—make that white man’s Hawaii story into as nuanced a movie as the piece was and I’d be there for it 100%
