The game would have been fine... if they hadn’t gone for the “game as service” approach - if they’d seen the change coming, and spent some time converting it into a more old-school multiplayer shooter, with third-party servers and whatnot, it would have survived regardless, and with no ongoing cost to them.
Your arguments come down to where one company can control the means of access, so we’re talking the closed systems that are consoles. This isn’t nearly so much a problem on PC where multiple digital platforms are competing on the same system and in some cases games can be purchased without DRM.
