Thats what I was thinking. They know it is a "mirror", they recognize themselves and their human and they know something is wrong. Maybe the mirror test is flawed in that it doesn't read the cat's reaction properly. They may know it is them in the mirror, they just don't care.

I don’t how it works in other countries but if you want to recoup damages you file a civil suit. Even if the company is convicted of something in a criminal trial the court doesn’t just automatically award compensation to the victims as far as I know. Criminal and civil cases are handled differently.
