PEOPLE can’t be illegal. That’s the point. Their behaviors and actions can be illegal, but calling a person an “illegal” is a way to dehumanize them.

I think most of the offense comes from the fact that “illegal” is mostly reserved for referring to immigrants who are undocumented. It criminalizes them in a way that isolates them. There’s an article in the New Yorker that mentions that we don’t say “illegal drivers” for people who speed or “illegal filers” for…
Well there are some complex things at play here. First of all, we don’t grow up calling the Pilgrims and Western settlers ‘illegal immigrants,’ even though they weren’t especially welcome when they arrived. Probably because they forced their culture on everyone else and destroyed everything they couldn’t assimilate.…
The term is both technically inaccurate- lots of people came here perfectly legally and then overstayed that legal visa, and lots of “illegals” are actually in immigration limbo- and actively harmful in that it stigmatizes people as illegal as opposed to the act.
I wasn’t sure how to answer your question, but I found this gentleman who puts it pretty eloquently: http://nohumanbeingisillegal.com/Home.html
A veritable gold mine of terrible grammar! We could make a bingo card.
I’m still on the guy’s side obviously, but an argument about your impeccable ability to teach gets a little undermined when you fail basic English while trying to make it.
Also the lack of apostrophe for the possessive on “doctors lifestyle”
Well Rent the movie came out when I was in HS and we definitely all watched it and loved it and sang many of the songs in choir and this was all in a super, super red state at a very conservative private school so it was pretty ok.
I also would look askance at a performer who blows his first line.
Well, he isn’t teaching English, so I’ll give it a pass. I did still have to stop at those words, because they hurt =(
Most women experience unwanted attention from an early age—the second you hit puberty, a whole new world of stares,…
I am so excited for you because Season 4 is the best season of all and you get to watch it for the first time. Cancel all your plans!!!
So-and-so is a dummy, and does not deserve your friendship, or your weed. And going out of his way to not include you in group plans is even worse. I mean, not saying he has to take you out one-on-one or anything like that, but fuck, would it break him to hang socially in a group setting with someone he doesn’t…
Exercise. I know it’s not fun but it can really help alleviating stress! I enjoy swimming, but running or lifting weights or anything that works up a sweat can help.
Concur on Millihelen. It was such a good mix of content, and with really engaging voices. Kinja isn’t my favorite either, and I’d be perfectly content if they switched to Disqus, honestly. But a random overhaul in favor of ... I don’t what, AGAIN, is just...why?
You can’t be serious about mourning Natasha Vargas-Cooper...do you honestly endorse her disgusting, misogynist post about Amy Pascal’s Amazon list purchases from the Sony email leak? Here’s the link: http://jezebel.com/this-is-amazin…
pot.
Love you all. I sometimes feel so frustrated when looking at the news or social media and how so little has changed in regards to women being respected as equal. The level of ignorance in the world. The lack of compassion.
Two weeks ago I posted about my boyfriend demanding I have an abortion (after he told me to go off the pill because he wanted children). I went through with the abortion, mostly because I didn’t want to lose him. I didn’t really want to get rid of my baby, but I couldn’t imagine life without him. Everyone told me he…
