Can someone research/post/discuss/rationalize the use of statistics from 137 years ago in current scientific hypothesis? I ask every time this comes up. How accurate were the instruments being used 130+ years ago?

This sums up global warming to me. How accurate are temperature measurements for 200+ years ago? How accurate, really, is our measurement of light that is a) 15 light years away, and b) from 200 years ago?
