It’s not about whether he is actively participating in the play, it is about whether he is considered a player on the ice.  It doesn’t make sense to me as a non hockey guy that if he’s not being counted as one of the six men on the ice, why would he be counted for anything else.

The point the author is trying to make, that I agree with, is it doesn’t make any sense that a guy who is doesn’t count as one of the 6 men on the ice could be called for offside.

The last two seasons have definitely suffered from the missing episodes, but D&D have never shown they had the skill to fill them (see Dorne). It might just be better to have this shortened ending then have them try and fail to fill in the missing pieces.  To be fair, GRRM hasn't been able to wrap it up either.
