Not So Different

It happens to me all the time. You have to reload the page in your browser to clear out the bug.

So lighten up, Francis.

That “subtract a star” bug happens to me all the time. You can fix it by reloading the page in your browser. Of course the Kinja tech support people should have fixed the bug themselves a long time ago.

Unfortunately this failure to write decent characters is all too familiar in the world of sci-fi. So many sci-fi novels feature cardboard-cutout characters, unconvincing dialogue, and human interactions which are, frankly, rather inhuman. And of course, there’s the ever-present Mary Sue/Gary Stu author insert wish

Very few male sci fi writers can write a female character.

Unfortunately KFOG too has been gutted by recent management decisions. About a year ago they decided that they needed to chase a younger demographic, so they went for a complete purge. They fired ALL the DJs, cancelled the 10@10 segment, and removed all pre-1990's music. They even ditched the classic logo for some

OK, so thanks/no thanks to other commenters for reminding me of these other aural atrocities:

I seem to remember that he claimed not to have ever heard Postal Service before writing his debut album, so they couldn’t have been an influence.

They still exist, but they’re becoming thin on the ground. Unfortunately I can’t recommend my local station, Live 105 (KITS) in the San Francisco Bay Area, for two reasons.

Yeah, I’m not saying that style of music is objectively terrible or anything. Karen Carpenter, Neil Diamond, and also Burt Bacharach all have lots of credibility with today’s musicians. It’s just strange how that whole style of music has disappeared from radio and not popped up in any new media. If anybody is still

The 1960's stuff is pretty experimental and not really very accessible to casual listeners. Their legendary status is mostly a result of their having been a key part of the original SF hippy music scene, not for chart success or anything conventional like that.

It’s especially frustrating because Portugal. The Man have had a number of good songs over the years (“Got It All (This Can’t Be Living Now)”, “People Say”) which got zero radio airplay, at least in my area. I don’t understand why radio music directors love to narrow the playlist down to 100-200 songs which they will

Yep. Another reason it’s disappeared is that, like The Carpenters, Neil Diamond, Tony Orlando & Dawn, etc., it was part of a genre of pop music for adults which ignored or even eschewed most rock or R&B influences, and that entire genre has pretty much evaporated completely. The only remnant of that type of music now

Yeah, Aimee Mann is just fantastic, but that cover is the one song of hers I just don’t have time for.

It’s like switching the handle on a mop 10 times and the mop head 5 times yet maintaining it is still the same mop

If LaRue was right in her suspicion that there was never really a movie anyway, then there wouldn’t even be anything for her agent to gain from this whole fiasco.

There are alt rock stations that still have that song on hourly rotation. Also, “Father of Mine” by Everclear. Un-fucking-believable.

The talk page says there have been at least five separate debates on whether to delete this page. I have to say I don’t really see how this meets Wikipedia’s standards, since any list of “best” or “worst” art or entertainment is always going to be totally subjective and therefore basically worthless. Even critics’

“Rock Star” appears on the Wikipedia page as the worst Nickelback song. “How You Remind Me” and “Photograph” are not great, but there is so much other music that is so much worse that I can’t really see those two falling into the “worst ever” category.
