I liked John Cleese’s observation that often people complain about being offended because they think they are supposed to complain, whereas “if someone is truly offended they speak to you privately, and then of course you feel terrible.” That keeps coming back to me nowadays.

Here are some things I don’t understand:

Post-Python, I was impressed with his passion for mediaeval and ancient history. He hosted a series on historical military and battle techniques that was very good, and I’ve always felt that the atmosphere in Monty Python and the Holy Grail was more realistic than in most films set in the Middle Ages.

Did “horse girl” become the common term? Back in my day you were just “horse crazy”. It seems strange that the phenomenon of (some) girls becoming horse-crazy between say 8 and 12 is well-known—Freud put it in the “latency period”—and yet psychology has no actual name for it. Hippophilia?

This is a fine solution to having to actually carry a large book around (for which they make bookbags and backpacks), as long as you don’t care that once you are done with the book no one else will ever want to use it and so you might as well immediately throw it into the garbage. Or recycle it, if you’re not too…
