Loved Andrew Scott so much that I had to look up who the actor was on IMDB. Not a showy performance, yet hilarious.
On the other hand, Scott Nearing (famous old-time homesteader and radical) didn’t eat breakfast because he reasoned that his body hadn’t been doing anything for 8 hours so it didn’t need food yet. He lived to be 100.
Use an iced tea bottle! I do that at the movies all the time.
I usually want to have some kind of carbohydrate in the morning. Otherwise I don’t want to cook when I’m not quite awake, so sometimes I have leftover soup or veg dish from the night before.
Yes, I read Lyra’s Oxford last May, it totally went out of my head so I re-read it, and presto! It needs to be read just before “The Secret Commonwealth.”
“The Secret Commonwealth”, book 2 of Philip Pullman’s sequel trilogy to His Dark Materials. It is largely international intrigue, with fantasy, set in Central Europe and Constantinople (sic). Not a children’s book: sexuality and profanity appear here and there. I am 3/4 of the way through and have no idea what’s going…
I went to see it too, and found it impressive, moving, yet almost bland. Unfortunately, the theatre where I saw it decided it was an “action movie”, so half the previews were for horror movies that nobody in the audience wanted to look at.
In the early eighties she went on the road with Karen DeCrow, the president of NOW, debating the Equal Rights amendment. I am proud to say I heckled her.
I can still sing the opening of the theme song. In 1959 I spent the summer in Princeton at 77 Sunset Drive -- my little brother and I sang it all the time.
The music, which was a compilation anyway, is fantastic, but the rest of it is, as you point out, depressing and unpleasant. Letting your friends gang-rape a girl who wanted you, in the back seat of your car, does not make you attrractive.
And how does anyone know whether or not he had a nice comfortable forty-ish wife with whom he had been high school sweethearts? Everybody is envisioning a babe or trophy wife, but we don’t actually know, do we?
But it was Vader who was hot (in a Dark Lord sort of way) and not middle-aged Palpatine.
The movie itself felt 6 hours long. I kept thinking, “The fight by the heaving ocean—this is the climax, right? No? So THIS is the climax? No?? How long is this thing going to be?”
Finished watching the “His Dark Materials” series, then re-watched “The Golden Compass” movie, then finished re-reading the trilogy. Had to re-read “Lyra’s Oxford”, which I read last May but could not recall a bit of. It takes place two years after the end of “The Amber Spyglass”, and now that I’ve started Book 2 of Pu…
I am looking forward to Scarlett Thomas’s “Oligarchy”. I find her a fascinating young writer who showcases a contemporary slacker Britain I can relate to.
We can take a look at cultures like those in the Amazon to get an idea of what pre-”civilized” peoples liked to do. Drinking certainly, feasting, singing, dancing; dressing up in elaborate costumes; playing a gender-based sort of “doing the dozens”, wherein each side makes effigies of the other’s genitals and cracks…
Kerry Washington: “Ha ha, I’m topless under my jacket!” DO NOT LIKE this look. Displaying your bust is one thing — but we should not be peeking inside your clothes. She wasn’t the only offender.
I saw the movie yesterday, being both a cat person and curious about just how awful it might turn out to be (having seen the 1998 video). It’s not that it’s bad... it’s that it’s a not-great, puzzling movie of a WTF musical. Great dancing by Francesca Hayward. Taylor Swift was not terrible (but cats don’t have…
Not able to edit, so I wanted to assure igotlickfootagain that I do find Australia being on fire very distressing. I knew people who lived near Newcastle in NSW, so I wonder how their home is faring.
