A Locksmith Hard Rule has always been: Don’t practice on locks that are in use. Buy a cheap lock to practice.

Where as picking in a pinch is fine, if you damage the lock you could have a hilarious bunch of other issues to deal with.

I teach my friends on cutaway locks to show them the process.
