Except that he does initiate, unintentionally but nonetheless, it by allowing it to draw focus — that's a big difference between how he constructs his plots as opposed to Fuller.  On top of that, it doesn't add anything to his story, but only serves as a talking point for which he doesn't actually have anything to say.

I don't know if I'd go so far as to call it realism.  More like "topicality" to me.  Same thing with the cell-tapping tech you cite. It comes off as merely "eh, it's something to do" and is shoehorned into a plot.
