Shit, that's not just in America. I live in a bilingual country (Canada), in a province with a fairly significant francophone community (Manitoba), and anglos consistently fuck up French place names, to the point where names of actual towns have officially become anglicized. It's bizarre.

To me, "Creep" was all about that "JHUGJHUG" muting right before the distorted part. That was literally the only part of the song I cared for at one point. I loved that. I don't know why.
