What I found interesting in comparing the book and the movie was that, in the book, there is no clock.  It's a metaphor for life and it's ticking inevitablility.  I guess that was too vague to put in a movie so they added the actual clock. 

My go to, it never goes bad, it's raining out and I have to eat something meal is Chef Boyardee canned ravioli.  It's okay, it heats in the microwave and it's even better since it now has a pop top on the can.

According to the TV movie they made about Joe, he knocked out a half dozen hoods, who then jumped back up and beat him until he was paralyzed.  Artistic license I suppose.
