I grew up in Raleigh and got to see the Connells many times. I wish they had received more recognition, but so it goes. Really nice guys, and they still get together and play sometimes.

Jimmie Dale Gilmore's cover of "Blinding Sun" is fantastic

Good call. If you like this article and haven't read it, I can't recommend The Devil and Sherlock Holmes enough - it's a compilation of Grann's articles, all of which are as great as this one

If I'm reading the hyperlinked article correctly, they were basing this model on data from Japan box office. Everyone owns a smartphone in Japan and probably a lot more people are on Twitter. I'm not sure this model would yield the same results in the US

I'd love to know how/why Stevie Nicks got involved with that kid. That song is really fucking terrible

A few years ago I went to see Gillian Welch and David Rawlings at the Largo in LA. They put on a great performance that would have been remembered by me for ages, but it was afterwards that things really got interesting.
Some artists play the "Little Room" after shows - it's a bar in the Largo that fits about 50

Anything off of Montreal's Hissing Fauna would qualify. "Heimdalsgate" is probably the poppiest song I've ever heard but the lyrics are clearly about someone who is depressed. Ditto "No Conclusion" which ends the album

I went to the Ryan Adams show the next night and people were about this. Thankfully we just had Garry Shandling doing standup as the opening act, which was slightly more awesome than this

My introduction to Damaged was Dirty Projectors' Rise Above. Completely amazing how they reworked the songs

I just opened my NMH box set last night, and I have to say, I think $88 is a steal. I thought about getting the Achtung Baby and Nevermind box sets, but ultimately they were over $100 for the original vinyl plus 1-2 bonus vinyl. This NMH box has 2 12" LPs, 2 10" and 3 7". I wish more bands would throw in extra vinyl

Cougar Town, really? Does the AV Club get BBC America? Luther and The Hour were only six episodes each but were way better than these sitcoms

I went to the Bob Mould tribute in LA, and he mentioned that he'll be playing some Copper Blue shows next year (very very very very very few, he said, but still)
