Totally agree about Orbison's last album! And his version of Costello's 'the comedians' is even better than the original, imo.
Here's one of my faves, mostly forgotten from some early album:

the Wino and I know, and Nautical Wheelers are both great tunes! kinda a shame he gets remembered/judged for his shit songs.

Just heard that one today on radio, and yeesh, it still is the worst pseudo-intellectual reference in a pop song.

I almost think it's MORE interesting b/c only seventeen watched it! I don't know that american idol, etc would be enjoyable to dissect- kinda like rating/analyzing Burger King's success. It's one of those things that, if you're a songwriter and really into craft, is such a rarity that you're even happy to see an

Shoot! Somehow didn't catch that. And yes, so true about Jes- that was one of those arbitrary parts that bordered on genuine ignorance. Or, more likely, they were so desperate to 'frame' her with some sort of label, a la the boy-band dilemma.

    Well said!

I can tell from allll the comments that this show wasn't watched much. But, dear joshua, as a wannabe songwriter, I watched it religiously, and i had the exact same reaction you did. I don't think I've ever gotten as infuriated at the judging process (already arbitrary, it being a fucking reality show) as i have

I feel for you, Bradley! hope you can salvage something from this day. It's a brighter (though slightly oblique) Beatles' mother-ish song, but i've always liked 'Let it Be' for my Mum. And the origin of how it was written (from a dream) helps.

Know this isn't the place for it!- but God, do i agree about the whole Sondheim/Webber thing. I'm a huge fan of Sondheim as a lyricist- read both his books multiple times (check them out, if you haven't), and he seems like such a humble/gracious dude to top it off. Yet I always get the distinct impression I'm

I WON'T (re)appoint them!! (thank you sir, for putting that tune in my head)

Still my fave, for some reason. Love how he forgets the lyrics on one verse, and 'dada-da's' his way through it.

This, a thousand times. And the analogy can even be compressed down to within the Beatles themselves, with the whole 'john vs paul' argument. One went on to be more theoretical, with diminishing returns. One went on to be (imo) more musical.

    Well said

Really? In terms of most younger generations (what I think she was referencing), I think it's pretty damn spot-on.

… I've now moved on, to a new man named Dawes

Don't know his name, but the drummer for this band is amazing. They should make him the frontman

Regardless of what you think of the song/whistle, you gotta give it up for that bridge- one of the best, and sung with the perfect amount of desperation. I can't imagine how in the world a 26 year old could muster that.

But then Templeton reminds you of Tom Mccarthy, which reminds you of Station Agent- which, damn, what a good fucking movie? Which reminds of Dinklage, to Tyrion, to GRRM not writing and eating roast beef au jus… wait, how'd we get here????

Really? It didn't make the family morning bulletin. But there was that garage sale

Wow, i very much expected to not like this, but (imo) it's really solid stuff.
