The problem being discussed in the article is that there's been too much usage of rape depicted as stakes for the usually male heroes, without sufficient care taken for female characters who actually experience the rape.

I have to guess that it's a pretty specifically male-driven fantasy, that a woman can reclaim her value in the eyes of (male) audiences, sprinkling in with some old-fashioned bloodlust.

The consensus at the time (Season 2) was that the show handled Gemma's rape and its aftermath as well as they could have. But then the rest of the show happened and exposed the good seasons as exceptions rather than the norm.
