In retrospect, it looked like Dunaway thought Beatty was joking around and didn't think anything was amiss, and just read what she saw on the card to move along the show. The fault appears to lie with DiCaprio possibly handing the envelope back to a crew member, who then handed it to Beatty.

I'm all for nerd stuff EVERYWHERE, but perhaps the police should have a little more decorum.
