"Ghost And Mr. Chicken"! Which actually is a bit scary in at least one place

Lots of kids (and adults) won't watch anything scary, no way, no how. Some kids aren't allowed to by their parents, either because of ideological reasons or because their folks know they'll wake up screaming for a month.

Let's have some Cathy Moriarty love here! She is perfectly used in "Matinee" as a pneumatic-looking, deadpan-acting "nurse" (and leading lady in "Mant!")

It was a part of a larger wave of werewolf movies which were popular at the time. Of these, "An American Werewolf In London" was the first, and got all the attention, though "The Howling" did pretty well.Their main selling point at the time was the transformation special effects. The "gritty" part of Superman 3 (I assume you mean him being a mean drunk, and fighting with himself) was one of the only two things which sometimes are praised about that piece of crap. The other was the slapsticky opening credits montage.

It's why coming out still means something to a lot of people - there are people who will deny it no matter how flamboyantly you dress or act. It's why Liberace was able to successfully sue that London journalist for libel in the 1950s; his upheld claim was that being called "fruit-flavored" in the press was malicious
