I know everyone else posting here will disagree, but the book was essentially an engineering problem set disguised as a novel. He's MacGuyver on Mars, surviving with science and snark. There's zero character development, and every now and then some one opens up a book of clichés and calls him a "magnificent bastard"

Let's not neglect the fine, fine work of Edward Everett Horton and Eric Blore in these films. Simply the best.
