The movie is certainly insane but not incoherent. Many of the themes from the book are still there, even though they are perhaps buried a little too deeply or rushed over a little too quickly. As usual the book is better, but I'm in the "liked the movie too" camp.

I thought it was really good, probably because of the age at which I read it:
