I like to think of Hemingway as "The Most Interesting Man In The World" from the Dos Equis commercials. It seemed clever and interesting at first, but now that I'm intimately familiar with the commercials, I just sort of roll my eyes whenever it comes on.
I will second the dissent on open homophobia. That seems too strong to me. This is coming from a person who has read a significant portion of his work pre 1999 (Bag of Bones was where I stopped), and often regrets the time thusly wasted.
