If I remember correctly (and I've only seen the movie once, so don't count on it) the only "fighting" that happens is in the last ten minutes of the movie. Someone flies into someone else's airspace… and there's conflict somehow. I don't know.

EDIT: It's been a while since I've read it, so for all I know he did actually utter a curse and condemn her to Hell, but I think the interpretation re: responsibility is still true no matter how she wound up there.
