Plus the Dominion was just technologically superior to the Alpha Quadrant in several areas. They had weapons that could cut straight through Starfleet shields (at first), transporters that could beam through shields, and extremely sophisticated genetic engineering/cloning, to name a few examples.

I thought the two biggest problems with S7 were bringing on Ezri, who was a pretty lame character and didn't add much to the show, and the way the plot just kind of got rushed into a resolution in the last few episodes.
The opening stretch of episodes in season six is by far my favorite part of DS9. It's just fantastic all the way through… Well, except for (the annoying character not to be named because of spoilers) who shows up in Sons and Daughters.
I'm guessing it's the long hair and charming accent that puts him into the non-threatening/dreamy zone that so many young women love.
