I saw Christopher Benjamin play Falstaff at the Globe (Merry Wives) and he went very big, which is fine for that play.
Alex, have you never seen Simon Russell Beale? His Falstaff on screen (Hollow Crown trilogy, for those who missed it) is utterly definitive and Shakespearean roles are central to his work. Welles is a part-timer by comparison.
