I have a hard time imagining anyone approaching a TNP album with "gee, I hope there's a ton of Bejar songs on here." Like, Bejar is really good, but he's never been the whole point of the project.

That lyric is fucking funny. I'm not sure why anybody would see it as controversial or roll their eyes about it.
Give him a shot. FJM is very good.
That was a huge part of what made me such a big fan of Kanye. I found it incredible that someone with such an oversized persona could make such absurd, comical jabs at the characterisics that made him famous.
Kanye used to be really funny and self-aware but unfortunately I think he's lost that. It's pretty sad to me as somebody who has always considered him one of the funniest hip-hop artists of the 2000s.
He's an incredible lyricist, IMO by far the funniest folk songwriter since Sean Bonnette of AJJ started going abstract instead of literal.
You're so lucky. The title track is my favorite thing I've heard from them in years, just absolutely gorgeous, and I wish I could see them perform it in person.
He's very good, but none of their most beautiful songs rely on him. "Mutiny I Promise You," "Moves," "The Laws Have Changed," "Fake Headlines," "The Bleeding Heart Show," "Brill Bruisers" - none of their greatest songs rely on him as a necessity.
It rules. It's fantastic. TNP are one of those bands where the critical approval comes and goes, but the quality of the music never falters.
Update: C+? You fucking kidding me? This album is amazing. The New Pornographers continue their run as the best indie pop band in existence. The title track of "Whiteout Conditions" is my current pick for song of the year. As far as indie rock & pop music goes you can't do much better than this.
He's the Kanye of indie rock - a very, very smart person unpacking his demons through music, and a lot of people mistake his brutal honesty for smug self-confidence.
Leaving LA is so well-written.
I'm probably going to spend a ton of time unpacking this album. It's not my favorite of the year so far, and I sure as hell don't love Misty as a person, but he's smart and clever and a brilliant songwriter, and anyone who loves music would benefit from giving his work a shot. "Chateau Lobby #4" from 2015 is one of my…
the New Pornographers' "Whiteout Conditions" is currently my song of the year, and the album it's named after is a strong condition for album of the year as well
I haven't heard anything from them aside from the album "First" is off of, and I really liked it.
I adore the first half of Hold My Home - "First" and "Drive Desperate" are fucking incredible - but sadly I think they're probably going to be grouped in with Fun as indie pop bands who never really got their critical due.
So far she sings lead on "This is the World of the Theater," which is a fantastic song.
It doesn't top "Fake Headlines" and "Moves." But I've given some thought to it and "Whiteout Conditions" is a strong third in terms of my all-time favorite TNP songs.
no it's definitely saying a lot because they're the best indie rock band of the last two decades
If so, I didn't approve of it.
