Every time I've fallen in love with someone, it's been someone who I've known was severely mentally ill and likely to hurt me. Part of that was probably my low self-esteem and inability to accept the idea that anyone who wasn't as deeply damaged as I am would be able to love me, and part of it was probably my naive,

I moved a bit away from it after the election & finding the weird-left twitter community that's grown around the Chapo Trap House podcast, but I was always planning to come back to the AV Club eventually… but it sorta seems like they don't particularly want the community that I first joined anymore.

There's a lot of sing-talking, but he sort of perfected it here. Universal Themes had his best song ever imo (Garden of Lavender) but also some of his weakest, rambling-est songs because he hadn't quite figured out how to use that style yet. Here he really figured out how to use it right, I think.

I wasn't sure how it would go down since it's a very biting and cynical take on Against Me's old fanbase, but the crowd was totally into it. Everyone shouted "the revolution was a lie" with her before the last chorus.

Buffy and Community have stuck with me for that reason - the writers clearly love the characters, and want to explore all their oddness and eccentricities, and are willing to venture beyond conventional storylines to do so.

There are some absolutely vital season 1 episodes, especially 'Modern Warfare,' which was where I think the show really found itself - that blend of intensely emotional character story arcs with batshit insane surrealist situations.

An enormous fuckup and satire of casual white feminism. In a very endearing way.

seasons 2 and 3 of Community are essentially flawless and place it among the greatest sitcoms of all time in my book.

Joke's on you, I've suffered from all of those things daily for years now!

the new Shins album rules, the new Xiu Xiu album rules, the new Sun Kil Moon album is really long and self-indulgent but it definitely rules, music is good rn.

fuck yeah

no its good actually

The more I read about his childhood - how his stepfather did some really unspeakable things to him while his mother ignored it - the more heartbreaking his attempt to connect with her on Waltz No 2 is.

never doubt James Mercer's ability to write the catchiest songs known to man

Wincing is my #1 unimpeachable Shins album, but I agree that this is in the top 2 or 3.

It deserves an A.

May we all be so lucky.

I really like Broken Bells, the first album is definitely better than the second but both are quite strong. This one doesn't have much in the way of the electronics from the BB albums, though - more of a psychedelic feel.

Fittingly, the AV Club has literally become an Onion article.

I'll have to check them out too. I've just been waiting for the Shins one for a while, Mercer is one of my favorite pop songwriters ever.
