It's David Mazzuchelli, but probably "produced" by Art Spiegelman.  Paul Auster was on a high at the time, with the comic book adaptation of City of Glass, the movies Smoke, Blue In The Face and Lulu on the Bridge.  That was my gateway drug introduction to his brilliance, that whole arc.  I was hooked from then on.
