I think you're right about Mako improvising that move. I was only able to watch the episode once today, but it looked like he had an aha moment and then was literally thinking about how to do it through that scene of him getting electrocuted.

I think it might be the nature of airbending, though King Bumi was able to earthbend with just his face. I guess you just need to be a certain level of badass to reach that skill threshold.
