Indeed, they are. As happy as I am to have new episodes in the works, I'd say that the way S3 ramps up and ends on an incredible high note would have been a hell of a way to end the series.

The characterization is obviously the biggest reason those scenes were so hard to watch, but also from a technical standpoint, just that we saw everyone else's reactions long before we actually saw Lane made it all the worse.
