A quick search suggests that there isn't a prominent usage before him (none show up in Google Books, for instance), but that other people have borrowed it from him (it's been used as a TV episode title, for instance), and I suspect that it's the slow spread that that entails which is responsible.

Really hard to make predictions on the subject, though- look at how many people that were supposed to remain important for long periods of time ended up not being so.
