The Box was played on Seattle's alternative station (back when our alternative station Kinda Sorta Mattered) and I got the album for Christmas and I was IN. The Tranquilizer is a top five soothing song to this day.

And now I start the stopwatch for the gap between the av club review and Amazon streaming getting episode 3 online. Don't hulu me bro!
Imagine standing on an ice rink with a sack full of baseballs. If you were to throw a baseball, conservation of momentum would kick you backwards. The more baseballs you throw, the faster you would be moving.
@avclub-13d7df3c17502af69aafccc758195f96:disqus is it possible to heat a residential home to 113? Or would just a heatlamp on the bed work? Assuming we remove safeties and such… I'll pondering the engineering of that.
I just learned the word portmanteau! @avclub-7cbaf9384cf3835106bf2f444c0bcf65:disqus ftw in my heart.
(Warning: implication of book 1 game of throne spoilers)
@avclub-951d3e731b6b2ac1e93cbba6e1b68e80:disqus Never saw that so I guess that makes more sense as an homage. Though it does seem a TRIFLE odd that in a land where all sorts of things are "bent" through powers that these particular thrown objects are mechanical delights.
Pounding out the essay was probably tl;dr at the best of times but it was still fun for me to try and put my thoughts in coherent order and try to make the case that the airbending avatar had it right and aang had it wrong.
@avclub-13d7df3c17502af69aafccc758195f96:disqus Fair enough, that is a 'sacrifice' in the proper sense. I still don't like it because it still strikes me as being incredibly selfish given how the entire population of the earth kingdom was at stake. Who knew that Aang was an Immanuel Kant fan?
Now THAT'S a twist I can get behind!
The gloves are dirt, but the generals aren't arrested with gloves. It's very clearly metal handcuffs and linked rods. I suppose one could make the case that it's just carved stone… but those hinges!
I'm in! Someone photoshop Pointy Pointy Chiro Rock as employee of the month a la Inanimate Carbon Rod and we got ourselves a meme!
the Tuna (nifty name link, how is that done?) makes a solid point. I could see firebenders shooting first and asking questions eventually. Maybe nobody was looking backwards? What about semaphores? Send a messenger hawk? Hawkie?
lawn gnome: not all risks are sacrifices and not all sacrifices are risks.
So I just noticed that in the finale of season 2, the Dai Lee were metalbending the handcuffs when they imprison the generals. I mean, they look like metal, they clink like metal… Did I miss something?
I like that the avatars are flawed. They strive to do the right thing but it's always a struggle.
When the rest of them are in perfect formation for the entire trip?
I wrote my essay last night!
I know that it's totally absurd for me to choke on rocket feet but some dormant physics part of my brain complains that there's no propellant being accelerated.
Perhaps one day Zuko will learn to use his words rather than launching fireballs at a beach party…
