And *are* you a duck?

Thanks, yeah! I went looking for that, too, once I started wondering about it. I see why "pound sign" therefore makes sense as a name… but # really doesn't look much like "lb," does it?

Lots of times "call 'em as you see 'em" would work.

The thing that's gotten me to understand how powerful bigoted speech is—and therefore be a lot more careful about using it—is seeing that it has a powerfully real emotional impact on the people that it's bigoted against. And I'm not unique in that regard.

All I can think of is SNL's Monex commercial. Golding your gold!

Oh, no.

Ohhh. You meant the definition of "parse" that exists in the hallucinatory dictionary that only you can see.

No, I really didn't think you had anywhere near bad intentions. I'm sorry you feel bad—I've had that sick feeling more than once, too, for saying something I didn't think was serious but really was to someone else.

"Parse" meant to name the parts of speech of the words in a sentence in response to the question "Quae pars orationis?" Conjugating verbs is a different activity.

Also, this, about the word "bitch":

The thing is, discussing something in the abstract, especially so you can debate why you don't find it offensive, isn't actually a neutral thing to do when someone's already said they find it offensive.

"Parse" does not mean "to conjugate verbs."

Aw, the L-lookin' thing for pound makes sense…. It's there for the same reason we use "lb," anyway.

All your criticisms are spot-on. I'm not generally irritated by those points yet—on the whole, I still like watching the actors/characters enough to balance it out—but yeah, the show's off course for the reasons you say.

Babysit her!

"If people are legitimately upset by the use of the word bitch, I would obviously not use it, but I have literally never encountered that view before"

Speaking of homages (it comes up in the linked interview), I have read some semi-heartbreaking fanfic stories about Calvin trying to get through adolescence. That poor little weirdo.

My reaction to that sketch was, "…Are they not aware that guys do rape other guys? They're acting out what a guy might actually do to sexually assault someone, and it's supposed to be funny because they've captured some cliches about bros."

Enh, the state of social media makes it pretty easy for someone to have not-quite-so-serious self-esteem issues and a pretty normal need for attention, but then end up broadcasting those issues to everyone.
