Yeah, that wasn't primarily tough love Don was dispensing to Peggy. There was an element of it, because his approach to his job *is* "show up and be DAZZLING," and Peggy is just solidly better than the guys around her—so I'm sure Don did want her to absorb that.

You know, you're right—the plot would have made perfect sense if they'd sent a different executive, who didn't know Michael well.

Well, but the show had Jim realizing that. And Jim got himself into trouble in the first place only because he was ineffective in trying to avoid Michael's manipulations. So that makes sense to me, even if it'd have been good for Jim to think through his plan better.
