A Rashomon episode of TVD would very entertaining, and a cool way to play with the flashback trope that the show relies on so heavily.

The thing is, not only did no one speak English a thousand years ago, no one spoke German either.  At least not the German you would hear today in das Deutchland.  It might have been a bit much to hire a team of medieval linguists, philologists, and speech coaches to get the cast through a ten-minute scene.

Tonight's flashback wasn't just a snapshot from the past or a character reliving the memory — Rebekah was telling a story.  There was even voice-over narration.  Naturally, Rebekah would tell the story in English.  Lapsing into Medieval Teutonic or whatever would not have been very edifying for Elena.

That scene proved to me that the Declan character isn't completely worthless.  Even if he is (inexplicably, since he's from the Hamptons) a Southie.

OK, that came out snarkier than I intended.  I like this show, even if some parts are mockable.

Oh, but don't you understand?  Jack and Amanda have been soulmates since they were children!  And even though Jack is unable to see through Emily's brilliant "blond hair" disguise, his heart somehow knows!

Don't we know that Amanda/Emily and Daniel are about the same age?  If they're siblings, that would mean David was screwing Victoria and Amanda's mom at the same time.  I just don't see that as something this show would do.

If you don't like "kind of soapy" then stop watching now.  In this show, "kind of soapy" is not a defect, it is the main attraction!

I watched the first episode of this mostly because I think Jason Isaacs is a wonderful actor, but so far I've left the other two episodes moldering on my DVR and now I am not sure if I will ever watch them.  At least it's better than Zen or that tiresome Morse spin-off.

Isaacs has an amazing ability to inhabit his roles.  In the 2003 Peter Pan movie that Todd referenced (which is probably the best screen version of the story ever), he played both Mr. Darling (Wendy's father) and Captain Hook, and I had no idea it was the same actor until the second viewing—the performances,

Please…please stop comparing TVD to Lost.  I am holding on to the idea that the writers know where they're going.

Here's my pitch for a new reality TV show, called "Isn't That Nice".  Every week, Yvette Nicole Brown brings two AV Club gimmick posters together to work out their differences with the power of positive Christian thinking and Muppets.  Schedule it on Wednesday at 8, opposite H8R.  It will get terrible ratings

As a recovering fundamentalist, I actually like Shirley's character the best.  The episode where she and Abed make the Jesus movie is my personal favorite.  Seriously!  But, I realize I am part of a small demographic.

Sadly, it is because of the rights issues mentioned in the article.  The Brains did not get rights in perpetuity to most of the movies that they ridiculed, and apparently some rights-holders take exception to their little masterpieces being mocked on television, or else want an excessive amount of money for each

Um, that looks weird, now that I read it.

No spoilers here, but you have definitely NOT seen the best of what Avatar has to offer.

Agreed that Iroh is not specifically training Zuko to assassinate his father and sister here, but it must be in his mind that Zuko could still someday become Firelord, or a great leader in some other capacity.  I'm not sure Iroh was all that ready to abandon the struggle until (SPOILERS) he got a taste of the sweet

Damn you, Calrassian — now I can't unsee that.  Nor can I unsee any of the other Rocko's clips that YouTube offered afterward.

"Energy trough"?  The second half of book two was where I started watching the show during its original run on Nickelodeon (my son started watching much earlier), and it is where I fell in love with it.  I completely disagree that it has lower energy than the rest of the series — the energy it has is not as bright and

The Zuko and Iroh story is great, and the flashback to Kyoshi fighting Shin is epic.  Really, I'd say that is some of the best stuff in the whole series.  But aside from a few funny gags the rest of the episode is terrible.
