I used to think the Phil Spector Christmas and/or Motown Christmas album were the pinnacle until I heard the Stax Christmas - it owns. Otis, Sam and Dave, Booker T - fantastic stuff.

Was it considered a hit, though? I thought not? (I just remember the poster - Rafe's "charming" mass-murderer smile, creeping up on JLo. He's a handsome dude, but his smile is terrifying.)

I have one a happy memory of Nemesis: in the cinema, when they rammed the other ship - a fanboy, about 4 rows ahead of me, gasped slowly "HOLY SHIT!" then whispered too loudly to his pal "they crashed the Enterprise!!!"
That's when I knew I was with my people.

HA! That's awesome! "Maid in Manhattan" was the movie that tried to pitch Rafe Fiennes as a Rom-Com lead AND they gave him an American accent. Can't imagine what went wrong…

Didn't it open the weekend after the first Lord of the Rings movie? And yeah, I don't get the hate for Nemesis either - it has some fun moments, but it's not great. Generations, though, is just awful.

and it's not his fault.

But it's not his fault.
Hey… it's not his fault.
You know… it's not his fault.
It's not his fault.

Oh Christ. I love Oldman, but I'm always nervous he's going to bring some of the Professional crazy.

Yeah, the music is fantastic but it's more Dvorak than John Williams. Really, it's one of the most brazen rip-offs I've ever heard.

Yup - the Dr. Manhattan scene gets some of the poetry and power of the book. The only other scene in the movie that got it was when Owlman (or whatever his name is) and Rorscharch (or however it's spelt) ride off to the ice fortress, with Jimi's "All along the Watchtower" blasting from IMAX speakers. Way more visceral

You me and Anthony Lane agree.
And Dumbledore Calrissian.

Another scene that I love, that seems from another movie: when they realize that the broadcast that they've received is a Hitler speech. Oh noes! Are the aliens Nazis???!!!

Isn't Ralph Lauren's real name Lipschitz? Try selling cord pants to preppies with that name.

Really? I never thought of Ben Grimm as 5'4"…
But c'mon: Chris Evens actually gave Johnny Storm some personality, which 40 years of comic writers where never able to do.
(Also: Kevin's Dad from the Wonder Years is the perfect Ben Grimm.)

In an alternative, perfect universe, he was Reed Richards in that awesome Fantastic Four movie that Steven Soderburgh directed. With Elisabeth Shue as Sue. Chris Evens is still the Torch but Ron Perlman managed to work in the role of the Thing around his Hellboy schedule.

You didn't realise that Hydra were a SS-style subset of Nazis?

Seriously: what was it about that stop light that made it so terrifying? Used to freak me out. The way it just swayed in the breeze… totally freaky.

He's pretty awesome on Larry Sanders…

So, how did Soderburgh get such a terrific performance out of her in "Sex, Lies and Videotape"?
I'm not arguing, I'm asking - he's very under-rated as an "actors director".
