I was also disappointed, though I tried to keep my expectations down after the Babadook similarly disappointed me.

I'd honestly rather help the idiot substitute teacher. I mean, serving jail time for that shit just seems crazy to me.

It's irritating that you're implying that those who don't like the book are just "too cool for school", as if we don't have legitimate complaints about it.

Your comment is way more thought out than anything in the book. I don't think Cline is capable of digging any deeper than "Stuff I like is awesome. Deloreans are AWESOME. Corporations kind of suck. Girls are pretty."

I loved Francesca and hated Phillip, so that was a double edged elimination for me.

I thought series 2 was awful. By the end, it was just a chore for me to finish it.

I was born in 81, so that probably puts me about 5-10 years too late for the book's target, but still of an age where I remember a lot of these things - playing text adventures, hanging out at arcades, watching Back to the Future at sleepovers, all that shit.

I don't read a lot, so I purposefully stay away from most genre fiction - not because I don't like it or think it's beneath me, but if I'm going to only have one meal a day, I'd rather it be a steak dinner than a candy bar. You know?

I was familiar with 90% of the references, Zork included. It didn't work for me regardless. But I don't think building a plot on references is a good thing. It strikes me as kind of petulant and indulgent.

I got really excited for his superbowl performance, despite not being a fan of his radio singles, because I had heard he was such a good performer. He was definitely awesome.

I scrolled through countless comments looking for "Everything Counts".

I think pretty much anything from Stop Making Sense could have made this list, but I'd have picked This Must Be the Place, as I find the album version comparatively unlistenable, but the SMS version is one of my favorite songs of theirs.

I've looked up pictures of the author just to glare at him.

Midnight Madness is a fucking gem and so much better than this book.

Well, they're not even good references. They're not sly little winks to people in the know and that can be easily ignored by people who aren't. I could get on board with that, at least if it was done in moderation.

I absolutely hated the book, but I'm a little curious how it will translate to screen. I'm not sure the 80s references will be as massively irritating if they're shown rather than explicitly spelled out.

To be fair, 10 pages is probably all you need to know whether or not you'll like this book. The problems with it aren't so much the typical plotting, character development, writing style - though those all have issues themselves. It's just the whole idea of the book itself.

It still seems fucked up to me that she's going to jail for this. Fucking JAIL.

To be fair, let's put a gun to his head and make him choose between a decent paying punch up job for the next Adam Sandler movie or manning the drive thru for minimum wage and let's see which one he picks.

I'm not sure I like the afterlife framework, but I do enjoy discussing fictional worlds from a variety of media and the pros and cons of those worlds.
