My guess is the ending was the part he hadn't finished personally since it does seem incongruous with the rest of the story and his style. I read Schnitzler's story but don't remember the ending there…I doubt it would have looked like the film's either.

Cole Porter's 'musical' songs are great, but he didn't write those as musicals - they were adapted for the stage later and are just very loose frameworks to showcase his great songs, if I recall correctly.
