I recall a short story about ghouls obtaining short-termed mental elements of those they ate. A person confronts one of the ghouls and asks them to eat their dead lover so they can have a final goodbye. It was odd with a bit of inside humor from the ghouls POV, but ended on a note of pathos.

The best part is seeing Joan melt under his gaze.
