It "perfectly encapsulates sexism in the industry?" Really? It supports the "popularity contest" complaints, but in no way were any female directors shoe-ins for nominations this year. No one was robbed. I just made a list of the 17 Oscar nominated films with 2 or more nominations and added anther 16 films that were

The idea that Eastwood has entire casts of supremely talented and mind-reading actors, not to mention technicians as well, is absurd. The director's job isn't just to generate the best work form the cast and crew but also to ensure that everyone contributes to a singular cohesive vision. Even my favorite Eastwood

The problem with women directing is that they aren't given enough opportunity to do it in the first place, not that they aren't awarded enough after the fact.

After skipping a generation and only getting the purple lunchbox for the next generation, I got back into gaming in a big way last generation. I thought for sure I'd go with the Wii, but when the previews and reviews for Left 4 Dead came out, I started with a 360. I eventually picked up a PS3 and found that I

Joss Whedon, Paul Thomas Anderson, Lars von Trier, Richard Linklater, Rian Johnson, Edgar Wright, David O. Russell, Bryan Fuller, David Sedaris, Glen Hansard, Damien Rice, Lisa Hannigan, Nickel Creek, The World/Inferno Friendship Society, Mike Birbiglia, BioWare

My backlog of games I bought but haven't played through yet is incredibly embarrassing, but I've tried to keep up with the critical darlings and really enjoyed this last generation.
I adored Alan Wake beyond reason. Loved the story, thought the television episode format was clever, found that the reload mechanic (the

Yeah, he's my all-time favorite director. I just love too many of his films way too much to not crown him king. He's willing to try different genres and styles, but every film he directs is distinctly his. His visuals are never distracting and always spot on. Most important, in an age where the vital role of the

I realize I should never expect anything more than snarky attempts at impressing others with oh so clever humor on AV Club discussion boards, but I can't help but be disappointed to see that no one seems to be giving this excellent movie any love. Beautifully written, impeccably acted, with some truly stand-out scenes

I remember enjoying that episode.

I was thinking the same exact thing.

I've been amazed by the varying reactions to Take This Waltz, in a good way, in that different people seem to feel that different characters are in the right/wrong. The characters are so complex and textured and it's fascinating to see the Michelle Williams character struggle with her basic decency and lovability,

I thought Seeking a Friend was very clever with its ideas about how people might react to the end of the world (especially with that restaurant scene), and then it just became so heart-breaking and romantic in the end. I totally bought into it and a friend of mine was left an emotional wreck by it.

I have to disagree on the opinions expressed for both Take This Waltz and Seekign a Friend for the End of the World. In my opinion, two of the best movies of the year, by far.

I've seen Glengarry and think it's rather great (it also features maybe my favorite Jack Lemmon performance), but I just didn't love it as much as the others listed. I guess I'm fired then? Or maybe the steak knives?

I originally posted a list of my own top movies of the decade, put together somewhat quickly, so if you actually see this, you can decide if you think my opinikon is crap:
