WETA used models and miniatures, but only for buildings and inanimate objects. For creatures, they would make 3-D mockettes during the design stage, but everything in the film was CGI. Treebeard and, obviously, Gollum were real things (in Treebeard's case, a large animatronic model) that had CGI laid over top of them.
