I guess they're more into the visual aesthetic—spandex, neon colors, and big hair—than, say, virtuoso guitar solos.

My understanding is that they were basically a blues outfit before Piper At the Gates of Dawn came out, and Pete Townsend (most notably) was bummed that the album didn't reflect what the band was like live.
