I'm surprised to see Albert Ayler on this list!  He is awesome.  Though I'm always a little suspect about claims of jazz's popularity in Europe.  I suspect that's very much a relative claim.  But I think there is more of a cultural infrastructure to support jazz musicians there than here at home.
