Most European papers are pretty restrained while still making a powerful statement. And anyone with an IQ over 25 can tell the Sun and Mirror are trash.

As a page designer I'm in awe. A lot of the continental European papers' front pages after the Charlie Hebdo attacks were excellent - a Dutch paper just had black boxes in place of articles as a statement of freedom of speech. Just amazing.

A San Francisco paper did that, too. I worked with a guy who was on that paper and he said they got a bunch of complaints about it - most about the use of the word but others about how they expected the paper to stay objective. I mean, if there's any time a paper can lose its objectivity then 9/11 is it.
