I wholeheartedly agree with your second point—the conversion of the Hulk origin story took so much away from the mythology and replaced it with this father-issues element that Lee wished to explore to, at best, dubious results.
Lee made an artsy superhero movie, a brooding existentialist experiment with a completely computer-generated man-baby protagonist. This I must defend.
