Although I haven't played the first Witcher and therefore can't speak to the differences directly, from what I understand the second game is one of those rare sequels that fixes nearly all of the first title's problems and builds on them tremendously.

That book looks really intriguing. I've been mostly on a non-fiction binge of late in regard to reading but it's about time I shift course back to novels, so I'll certainly have to keep that one in mind.
By and large it's very similar to the first game so the fundamentals and core gameplay are as solid and enjoyable as they've ever been, though it could perhaps benefit from a bit more innovation in its design.
