i know of a similar book from the 1820's, lydia maria child's American Frugal Housewife, or something similar. the recipes are fascinating, they show just how many simple spices and ingredients that we take for granted just didn't exist for most people 150 or so years ago.

i've been being amazed at all the free issues of old magazines you can find online. harpers from the 1860's, gardening magazines from the 1880's, etc. and ok, a lot of them are kind of boring. i like them though
