I pretty much like everything Gregg Araki's done. Other than that, I'd agree that most gay cinema — if the selection on Netflix is much to go by, at least — falls into one or more of the problem categories you listed.

I've not actually read any of Kieron Gillen's comics work, but he certainly writes well on Rock, Paper, Shotgun. Obviously it's a completely different style of writing, so it's hard to judge whether his talents would translate well or not.
