i'm usually only ever hungover the day after my birthday and new year's day. it used to be wayyy more often, but i just don't have the time to do that kind of damage anymore or the time to spend recovering. however, birthdays and new yearses happen regularly and i generally block out a day to get over all the fun

harry nilsson - "old forgotten soldier"

tom petty and stevie nicks - "stop draggin my heart around"

jay reatard - "blood visions"

not to clog the feed with a bunch of rambling, but, i just recalled an experience while subbing and, of course showing a lot of movies to a lot of kids. the worst being showing 'west side story' to a general music class (the class kids who have no real interest in music take because they have to take a music class

a few movies come to mind in this matter…
without a doubt the most memorable movie i remember watching in school was 'e.t.' over and over and over and over again. substitute? 'e.t.' too rainy for recess? 'e.t.' last day before a holiday vacation? 'e.t.' and so on and so on ad infinitum. to the point where i

my parents had weird ideas of what i should and shouldn't have consumed when i was younger. the only thing banned out right was mtv, but our teenage babysitters provided a way around that. i was discouraged from watching pro-wrestling and 'you can't do that on television" but squeaky floor boards and the trusty

that last calvin and hobbes is perfect.

yes, it is.

it's the only perfect record ever made.

beck - 'odelay!'

i have never and will never watch 'titanic'  the boat sinks, gilbert grape dies.  the end.  the only thing i'm missing out on by never watching it is hearing that colossal turd ballad again and wasting several hours of my life.

madvillian, then the vik vaughn record, then king geedorah, then dangerdoom

for a long time my absolute best concert experience—festival or otherwise—was seeing a pre-glam green day an nofx at the same warped tour (probably in 2000).  this was probably the last time i could honestly count these two bands among my absolute favorites, and getting to seem them both on the same day was about all

i saw aqueduct a few years back and after a just a short opening set he had the whole, albeit small, crowd clamoring for more.  after checking with the headliners and the club to make sure it was ok for the opening act to do an encore he threw down r. kelly's "ignition (remix)" with just his key board and a pre-set

oh man, it's not bad, but it's not great, either.  they're awfully young to be wimping out this early in the game.  that first album was the stuff!  because i had always wondered what t. rex would've sounded like as a punk band.  this is… i don't, man, like fine, or whatever.

nice call on 'slings and arrows'!!

i hope 'the power of salad' gets a mention this week.

poetry is jazz for people who prefer reading to music.  it's a lazy, shorthand for "i think i'm smarter than you."

this reminds me of a reasonable discussion or for our consideration from a few weeks back.  the one where it was discussed whether or not george saunders was a 'successful' writer despite having never written a novel.  well this ties into that:
