My in-laws live in a small town in Ohio, and I find myself overhearing the most innocuous conversations whenever we visit:

From your earlier post it seemed like you were assuming that your opinion about this controversial scene was because you'd read the books, so I merely meant that I wasn't sure that was quite all of it. So mostly, I think I was wondering if you'd want to elaborate on why your reading of the book made for such a

Surprisingly, I don't! But this is only because I've never taught a dedicated 'film noir' class. I would definitely assign some if I had an entire term for it. I really only teach noir in three aspects for now: in terms of their aesthetic (so we talk about German expressionism, etc), in terms of Hollywood Film history

Out of curiosity, did you guys read the book as well? I've never taught this particular film (I have my own little canon of 'noir' I use to teach it), but I'm always wondering how other films 'play' for students. This is a great film but has always felt more 'completionist' than 'essential' for me.

So maybe Cyd Charisse, then? She seemed pretty alluring.

Fair point! I was thinking hot=beautiful, not so much hot=sexy. Being a straight woman I'm probably better at guessing the former rather than the latter.

Chauncey was found roaming around Central Park by a nice family who took him back to their wonderful house and great big back yard where he lived HAPPILY EVER AFTER.

That showdown between black Joan and black Peggy tho

Yeah, I love Dawn's 'church girl' look, and the contrast to Shirley has been fun to watch.

I've been 'code switching' for so much of my life I'm a little relieved that there's actually a term for it that isn't 'acting white', which was what the kids in my neighborhood called it.

Well, I'm always one to try to encourage people to give 'soccer' a chance, but I recognize that given the dominant sports in America (football/basketball) it would be a difficult adjustment.

There are very few 'big clubs' in the EPL that aren't owned by entities or extremely rich dudes that aren't awful in some way. It seems best to look to the history of these clubs rather than their current owners these days-otherwise it's cynicism all the way down.

Well-said.

It was earlier this week-Tuesday, I believe. I don't watch ESPN all that much so I have no idea if there were ads for it.

Indeed

It's not so much a following as a 'guy that says it's all Julia's fault every single week in the comments'.

There is NO WAY my mom would've let me share a room with my college boyfriend. When I stayed with my boyfriend's family, I got my own bedroom and bathroom, which was pretty nice. It never really occurred to us to 'try' sharing a room since there were so many extra bedrooms there.

Wait, is this an alternate account for Jay_Z?

I started a separate thread if you're interested…
